What Are You Feeding Your Dog?

How much do you spend on dog food: $30, $40, $50 dollars a month? You might be forking out all that cash to feed your dog garbage. That’s right garbage! In fact, it would be a crime to feed a human what most pet food companies distribute. The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) classify dog food as being Feed Grade. This classification has much less stringent controls than Human Grade products. My pets are a part of my family. I know they are not human, but because I care deeply about them I felt outraged to learn what pet food manufacturers can get away with.

What does it mean to be Feed Grade? First of all Feed Grade products are not required to contain any whole ingredients. The ingredients they do contain are those leftovers which are not fit for human consumption. What’s left over are food ingredients that are expired, defective, moldy, and by products. By products are the leavings after the human grade stuff is removed through a manufacturing process and include corn husks, peels, stems, hair, grain hulls, carcass trimmings, carcass residue, charcoal, spray, dried animal blood, animal waste, raw leather residue and other garbage. I don’t even know what some of this stuff is, and the rest I wish I didn’t! Basically, this is the stuff they should be throwing away… It’s garbage, I don’t want to pay good money to feed this junk to my pets.

No wonder they keep having to recall dog foods. Besides the Salmonella recalls, which demand an immediate response. These food practices could be responsible for an abundance of other pet illnesses. A dog’s allergic reaction to molds can cause dry itchy skin, hair-loss and other problems.

Human Grade foods are better regulated. Human Grade food  is subject to stringent testing and sanitation  practices. Food is visually inspected for molds and is tested for nutritional content. In addition whole ingredients are used, which means no HAIR! dogfood

Fortunately, there are pet food manufacturers who abide by the Human Grade standards when making their pet food products. These mavericks are banking on pet owners who care about their dogs. Pet owners who don’t mind paying a little more for a higher quality pet food to sidestep astronomical vet bills. To avoid misunderstandings, AAFCO doesn’t allow the term “human-quality ingredients” on pet food packaging. If you have questions about what you are feeding your dog, check the manufacturer’s website or speak to a representative on the phone. If you don’t get the answers you want, switch pet foods.
